FX Artist Rick Baker Announces Retirement – Kind Of – Sort Of

Legendary special fx artist Rick Baker has been in the news a lot lately – not so much for a new film or project but because he seems to be consolidating and this weeks announcement of an “retirement” play further into that point.  A few weeks back we learned that the movie legend was auctioning off a huge lot of his creations which was an early sign of something going on and now we get this:

“First of all, the CG stuff definitely took away the animatronics part of what I do. It’s also starting to take away the makeup part. The time is right, I am 64 years old, and the business is crazy right now. I like to do things right, and they wanted cheap and fast. That is not what I want to do, so I just decided it is basically time to get out. I would consider designing and consulting on something, but I don’t think I will have a huge working studio anymore.”

This reads more like a “KISS” retirement (who are still touring some 20 years after their retirement) than a “hears your gold watch – send us a postcard from Florida” retirement.

I have a feeling we’ll still be seeing plenty of Mr. Baker’s handiwork, he’ll just be doing it on his own terms and there’s not a damn thing wrong with that.  Kick your feet up for a while Mr. Baker, you certainly deserve it.
